Picadillo Ground Turkey Recipe: Easy and Versatile

There are lots of reasons to add ground turkey to your diet, and great taste can be one of them with this Picadillo Ground Turkey Recipe.

This recipe is easy, but it opens the door to lots of dishes. Once you make this you can use it for a variety of dishes. It can be a one skillet meal, a sandwich, a topping, a filling, or a sauce; and it is easy to make.

Picadillo Ground Turkey Recipe

1 lb. ground turkey
1 tsp. basil
1 tsp. crushed cumin
4 cloves garlic chopped
1 medium onion (chopped)
1 pepper (anything from a Bell Pepper to a Jalapeno - chosen for the heat you desire – chopped)
1 cup chicken or turkey stock
3 oz tomato paste
8 oz diced tomatoes with liquid
¼ cup green olives (stuffed with pimientos or not – chopped – optional)
¼ cup raisins (optional)
2 medium potatoes cubed (optional)
vegetable oil for sautéing

Preparation

Combine turkey, basil, cumin, salt and pepper.

Heat the oil in a frying pan. Add onion, pepper, and garlic, and cook over medium heat for about 3 minutes. Add the ground turkey, break it up into small chunks with a wooden spoon and cook it until all pink is removed (about 5 minutes.)

Add tomato paste, diced tomatoes, and stock. Cover and cook the mixture at medium-low heat for 15 min. Stir several times while cooking.

At this point you can add diced potatoes to make this a one skillet meal or add green olives and raisins for variety and color and flavor. Cover, cook another 15 min.

Remove the cover – increase the heat - and continue to cook until most of the liquid evaporates. But you do want to keep some moisture as a glaze or sauce for the dish.


Here is how versatile this Picadillo Ground Turkey dish can be: serve it with rice, with potatoes, topping half of an acorn squash, on a bun (Sloppy Joe), as a turnover filling (empanada), as stuffing for potato balls (Papas Rellenas), in a wrap.
